If the cause of the wet walls is thecapillary rising damp, that is an electrical-chemical disturbance that affects buildings in which there is no insulation between the ground and the foundations, the technology provides various solutions. All are based on an 'external' and non-invasive intervention - there is no need to demolish the wet walls so to speak - but the various systems work differently and the result also changes.
The first distinction must be made between passive and active systems. The former act on the basis of electrochemical principles; the latter also, but use an electrical impulse and must be powered. The limit of active systems, however, is not that they need current, but rather in the fact that the frequency wave emitted does not always correspond to that of the electrical noise of the wet wall.
In practice: the active device emits a wave that intercepts the frequency of the electrical disturbance that causes the capillary rise and dry i wet walls pushing the humidity down. The electrical noise, however, is highly variable and changes its frequency every millisecond. This can make the intervention only partially effective.
Furthermore, if in the composition of the masonry there is a scarce presence of silicon - which acts as a conductor for humidity - the electrical impulse of the active device stops in the first layer of the surface and bounces outwards. This is the reason why the use of an active electrical device to counteract thecapillary rising damp often causes an increase in saline efflorescence, caused by ups and downs of the water molecules, without solving the problem of the presence of humidity in the walls.
Passive devices againstrising damp they differ instead between the devices that act on the water molecule and those that act on the electrical disturbance that causes the problem. The former reverse the direction of the water, but the disturbance inside the wall remains unchanged. In practice, the wall retains the attractiveness of the water molecule and therefore, even by reversing its polarity towards the ground, it is possible that it does not dry out completely.
Passive devices designed to act directly on the electrical noise present in the walls. Disturbance that is generated by the underground movement of water and by the difference in electric potential that is created between the base and the upper part of the wall for various causes: electrochemical currents, stray currents in the ground, electrosmog caused by radio antennas, electrical dispersions from systems electricity, electrostatic currents and groundwater movement.
